In both official and underground battles, there are 2 styles of battle: with the tuner in the battle and with the tuner on the sidelines.

A tuner is simply a conduit to receive the esper's power, amplify it, and send it back. The connection between esper and tuner is therefore important to gain the best power boost. Espers may have to switch partners around to find the best tuner for themselves.

Joyce is known as the Limit Breaker. He inherently has the ability to tune anyone to their highest potential. This is useful in measuring powers, and actually how he got started as a researcher. However his personality, like Red's, is difficult to get along with. Unlike Red, Joyce isn't just a quiet and misunderstood genius. He's more an arrogant jerk. His level of tuning, despite being the Limit Breaker, will never be above just a brawler.
Though Joyce is pretty cold towards the idea of dating relationships, Tess does have one thing going for her: Joyce has a thing for girls with long hair (though he'll never admit it ever).

Red is the perfect tuner. He is able to manipulate the signals he gets from espers perfectly to fit any situation, to the point where he can actually channel their powers for his own use. This is extremely taxing, and thus used rarely. He is also a genius in battle strategy.
Most tuners aren't capable of tuning multiple people perfectly, and have to divide their tuning utility between their espers. Thus, 6 people is the max a tuner can deal with before the strain begins to show. Red is capable of multi-tasking perfectly between 6 people and taking care of themselves. He's just capable of multi-tasking crazily in general.

Electra (lapras): A woman of water and ice, Electra is known for her singing ability. She had always wanted to be a singer, but when her father died, her songs began activating an unknown side to her abilities. As her songs got sadder and sadder, they caused people to pass out from the weight of the sadness. She tried her hardest to avoid singing in public, but couldn't help baring her soul at times. Red found her in a cave, singing her heart out away from people. By then, her song had grown to be known as the power of Perish Song. Though the rest of his team fainted dead away, Red withstood it and reached out to her.
Krissy (bulbasaur/ivysaur/venusaur): One of 3 promising espers taken underwing by Professor Oak, she and Red were teamed up so that Oak could keep tabs on both of their growths. She is a little p.o.ed that Green, Prof Oak's grandson, passed her up and chose her rival, Evans (charmander), to be on his team. She's a bit arrogant and desperate to be the best, but maybe that will change after being on Red's team.
Dac (Aerodactyl): When Dac joins Red's team, Joyce and Red meet very, very briefly. An unknown capsule was found in a quarry, and brought to Blaine's laboratory after a life-sign was found within it. The capsule was opened and a dinosaur was found trapped in a strange crystal. Red, when visiting Blaine's lab (after he had a) unknowingly created a diversion that allowed Joyce, Blaine, and a bunch of other scientists to escape Rocket and b) met and saved Blaine and his fire-team from pursuing Rockets), probed the dinosaur searching for a connection out of sheer curiosity. Everyone freaked when it suddenly opened its eyes and exploded out of the crystal, careening towards Red. Upon reaching him, the aerodactyl transformed into a human before passing out. The fact that the aerodactyl was a human that had powers to turn into an aerodactyl wasn't what was particularly surprising; many espers (notably dragon ones) had the ability to turn into creatures, or partially into creatures. But this one had been encased in crystal. Electra's little bit of psychic powers can be used to communicate with him, and Red and his team are teaching him how to speak. So far they know he came from a time much older than this one, and due to volcanic activity his clan had encased the younger generation in crystal, hoping that they would survive. There could be more... Dac refuses to be separated from Electra and Red, so he joined their team.
